Alan,

From a coaching perspective, could you give some insight on the correct but pad (heal and toe) position in the shoulder, I tend to make sure it is in the shoulder pocket, nearly level with the top of the shoulder.

I have noticed some very good shots mount the gun very low in the shoulder, I am interested in the theory behind it, I am referring to photographs in magazines it could be just for the photo?

Regards

Technically speaking you have it absolutely right. It is true that many mount the gun low in the shoulder but there is no way that this can be argued to be correct. A low mount means that you have to drop your head onto the comb. Dropping your head down guarantes that you will try and lift it again. With your head tipped forward you are not looking straight ahead but instead trying to look upwards. This impairs your vision and is very tiring. Shooters who mount low frequently have problems with the gun slipping as the pad is not fully supported. High in the shoulder pocket with the heel level with the shoulder top is the ideal position for allowing consistent gun mounting and a head-up stance.
